The Truth about Utah’s New Gold and Silver Currency Law
As usual, many people are leaping to ridiculous conclusions now that the Utah has become the first state in the Union to accept gold and silver as legal tender (as of May 22, 2011) since President Franklin D. Roosevelt confiscated gold from circulation in the 1930s. That was when the dollar was “as good as gold.” Now Utah is trying to make gold “as good as cash.” The law also exempts the sale of gold and silver coins from state capital gains taxes.
Apparently some people just read the headlines and immediately assume residents will have to carry around gold and silver coins to make monetary transactions in Utah. Others lament that the dollar will no longer be worth anything, and that this new law will be the single biggest cause of inflation in decades.
