Where to Find Buried Treasure with Your Metal Detector
While in a sense we’re talking about “buried treasure,” we’re not talking about pirate chests (although that could happen!). We’re talking about treasure that was buried on purpose or by accident.
An often-overlooked opportunity to find buried treasure is in your own back yard. Years ago, when people didn’t trust banks, they buried their money in their back yard. Some of them died without letting anyone know it was there. If you live in an old house, check the yard carefully as well as the walls.
And then, of course, there still is unfound pirate gold. It is said that pirates buried their treasure under beaches and in coves. Do some pirate research and target areas where pirate ships might have landed but then never returned to collect their loot, as well as areas where pirate (and other) ships sank.

Treasure Hunting Clubs and Organizations
One way to learn about treasure hunting worldwide as well as in or near your home town is to contact a treasure hunting organization in the area you are interested in.
Treasure hunting includes gold mining, prospecting, and panning; metal detecting; locating diamonds and other gems; pirate treasure; and a whole lot more. In this post I’m going to list some of the websites which offer state-by-state lists of clubs as well as other resources.
MiningGold.com offers a huge free online directory of gold prospecting clubs and organizations throughout the United States and around the world.
Another worldwide directory of gold panning, mining, and prospecting clubs can be found at ProspectingChannel.com.
You’ll find a list of Metal Detecting Clubs in California, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, and Washington at Goldbummin.com.
The Prospecting and Mining Journal offers a wealth of mining agencies and resources, associations, organizations, and clubs, organized by state.
While Kellyco sells metal detectors, they have a detailed list of treasure hunting clubs, organized by state.
Happy Treasure Hunting!
Panning for Gold in Maine: The Swift River
While there is gold to be found in California and Alaska, and many other states as well, did you know that MAINE is a great area to pan for gold? The Swift River and its tributaries, near Byron (off of Route 17 between Rangeley and Rumford), is a popular gold panning area because large nuggets are often found there. At the very least you’ll find flakes and small nuggets, and it all adds up; it’s all real gold.
The Swift River and its many feeder streams have produced more gold than all of the other (known) Maine gold regions combined. And here is the really exciting thing about this area. While gold still abounds here, no one has been able to locate the source of the gold, the “mother lode.” Whoever finds it will become very wealthy!
